Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hypnosis and How does it Work?

We all move in and out of hypnosis many times each day; in front of the TV, driving to work, doing the dishes or even mowing the lawn. A perfect example of being in the trance state is on a road trip. Mesmerized by the white lines, the sound of the road, the rhythmic movement, you can be driving or sitting in the passenger seat…   chatting as you travel along in the car perhaps, and then suddenly you recognise a familiar landmark and you think to yourself, “My goodness, we’re here already”. Where were you? In truth, completely present but in an altered state of mind. It’s a little like a time warp.

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring phenomena that allows the part of the mind that processes ideas and information unconsciously to be accessed. This allows thoughts to be refocussed on new life enhancing ideas and concepts that will propel you from where you are, to where you want to be.

Check out the video for a visual explanation of this…Can I be hypnotised?
As I said earlier, hypnosis is a naturally occurring state, we do it on a daily basis in the normal course of life. And yes, we can all be hypnotised. Usually the more intelligent a person is, the easier it is for them to go into and gain benefits from hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

When you come in for your hypnotherapy session you will not be forced into hypnosis, rather you will be encouraged by the relaxing environment and your own desire for change to allow yourself to gently relax into the trance state.  Clients attend Albury Hypnotherapy to get a change in some area of their life and regardless of whether you are feeling a bit nervous about losing control or just anxious that you can’t relax you will naturally move into some level of trance, and light or deep, it won’t matter, as change can be effected at any level of trance.

What does it feel like?

I usually describe the trance state as feeling a bit like a meditation or a daydream because you know exactly what is going on but you're letting yourself drift, feeling comfortable, you know exactly what is going on in and around you but your totally relaxed and just letting things be. It's quite a pleasurable experience.

Will I lose control?

Absolutely not. In hypnosis you are actually hyper alert, it is the exact opposite of the zombie like state that thanks to Hollywood many people expect to experience. You will be completely aware of what is being said and what is happening within you and around you during the whole session.

How many sessions will it take?

In a way that is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string but what we find time and time again is that clients tend to report measureable change with four to six sessions of hypnotherapy. Naturally, for compounded or multi-layered issues additional sessions may be appropriate.
